How to measure the volume of wort in a carboy

Plastic fermentation buckets usually have nice markings on the side to tell you how much volume you have.  It can be a little tougher to tell when you are using glass carboys.  We purchased Etching Cream, which is an acid that etches the glass of a carboy.  We filled the carboys up with 5 gallons of water and marked the level using masking tape.  We then added another half-gallon and marked with masking tape again.  You can paint the etching cream on between the masking tape and create nice volume markers on your carboy.

To apply the etched numbers we used stencils.  We found stencils that can be used over and over again:

Armour Etch Over N Over Stencil Upper Case

• Narrowest letter- 1/8-inch wide
• Widest letter- 1/2-inch wide
• All letters- 5/8-inch high

Each stencil can be reused between 15-20 times depending on the amount of pressure, care of use, distance between the tip of the blasting gun and the stencil, and the type of abrasive (we recommend between 180-220 grit size preferably 220).
